Alembic and lights

(Gilles38) #1

Hi all,
maybe the staff an comment on this.
I have exported a short animation from Blender (Alembic format) and I get incomplete shadow casting.

When I use the triangulation option for the export, then shadows are fine (although the animation looks somehow like a Stop Motion, I don't know why, I think all the objects have a constant vertex number throughout the animation).

Here my export option (no triangulation here)

Weird! Can you post links to the two versions?

Hi James, sorry for the late reply.
Hope this helps:

Alembic 'raw'

Alembic with 'triangulation':

and the same 'raw' Alembic with no triangulation but with a 'ground' is OK !
Any clue about this from you guys? (Sorry I didn't take time to put the textures)

This shadow problem isn't seen when light1 and/or light 2 are spots (instead of 'Direction') perpendicular to the scene but it appears when I rotate the spot with the resulting shadow ressembling my first model in Alembic 'raw'.
Hope this helps

Hi @james, anyone among the satff to look at this ?
To summarize my tests, I would say that Direction lights behave as Spot lights but I am not sure...
Thanks

Sorry for the delay. I don't have an update yet, but @paul_sketch mentioned that the bounding box is very strange on the quad version.
