Frequently Asked Questions

General questions

  • What's the submission deadline?
Entries close Wednesday, October 12 October 12 at 23:59 New York Time. This page will help you out what that means for your local time.
  • I don’t own a VR headset! Can I still participate?
Sure thing! The best thing to do would be to get a cardboard viewer - it will allow you to experience your scene in VR, although you may have to work with a simplified version to allow for reasonable performance. If you live in New York or Paris, we’d be happy to see you in our offices so you can try it out on our high-end setups. Just contact us to make an appointment at community (at) sketchfab (dot) com.
  • I live in [insert country here]. Can I Participate?
Yes, you can participate from any country in the world.
  • When will I get my free month of Sketchfab PRO?
We will process the new WIP threads every workday and will give you your month of PRO. So worst case it could take three days (if you register on Friday night), but usually we should set you up within 24 hours.

Questions about entries

  • Are TV Movies allowed?
Yes, TV Movies are allowed, but not television series.
  • Somebody else had the same idea! Does my scene have to be unique?
You can choose any movie scene that you like, including a scene that another artist is already working on.
  • Can I submit more than one entry?
Certainly, you can submit as many entries as you like!
  • Can I use work that I created before?
Your work should be new and original. Having said that, it's okay to reuse some assets that you have created earlier - just don't copy entire scenes.
  • Are there any restrictions with movie's classification?
Like any work on Sketchfab, please keep your entry 'safe for work'.

Can i submit a anime movie scene ?

(Bart) #10

Yes. Animated movies are allowed. Just be sure it's not a scene from a television show.

(Ecorob) #11

Can we submit something from a limited series? Example, something from American Horror Story?

(Nczuma) #12

If we link to soundcloud or YouTube in the description will the audio be factored-in as part of our entry? I'm excited to participate, but it feels like omitting audio can make some scenes feel a bit lifeless.

(Artfutura3d) #13

Hello, you can participate in other countries? I am from Perú

(Vat1) #14

There is no restrictions with movie's classification or specific scene? ( e.g, I'm meaning the Korova Milk bar from A Clockwork orange) O.o

(Mhazani) #15

How does the month-long pro upgrade work?

i.e when do we get it? Got some HDRi environments I need to upload for my scene...

(Bart) #16

No, movies only - no television shows.

The scenes will be judges on your artistic work only; adding sound is certainly a cool idea, but it would not be your 'own work'.

Where do we upload are submission to? And can it be in app form?

(Bart) #18

You need to upload your entry to Sketchfab

From the blogpost:

How to enter

Create a Sketchfab piece that puts the viewer in the middle of an iconic scene from a movie. While we recognize the power of television, for this contest we’re going to keep it closed to feature-film movies only. Movies inspired by television shows are allowed. The emphasis is more on an environment in the movie as opposed to characters, although they are optional. Decide if you want to participate in the animated or static category.

Hope that helps!

(Shadow Aurora) #19

Can Tilt Brush be used to design a scene for this contest or are you looking for entries typically created with Blender, Maya etc.?

(Creativeblendproductions) #20

What are the guidelines for textures? Can we use Open Source textures from CGTextures Or Poliigon ?

#21

Absolutely! In fact, some others are doing that already.

#22

Open source textures are fine.

(CrisVonUnruh) #23

I have a question about the scene design and the level of immersion we have to create. Obviously you want to embrace the use of VR goggles, yet your examples show more of diorama kind of style.

With my scene in mind (https://forum.sketchfab.com/t/i-dare-you-i-double-dare-you-pulp-fiction/10540/2) would it be better to create a closed room to give the user the feeling like he is Brad or would you prefer a version with a missing wall for a better view without VR?

(Mhazani) #24

Came here to ask a question similar to @cristianz. I've taken a look at Sketchfab's VR mode and it's very impressive - and can be strikingly different than the usual diorama aesthetic.

Should we be designing "for" VR, with that view in mind? Can I rest knowing that the entries will be judged in VR, so I can plan for that? Obviously the possibilities for full immersion are far more promising in VR mode, but I want to make sure that my scene will be experienced and judged the way it's intended to - in full VR:). Can I count on that?

(Halon Keiser) #25

Are we being judged on our process, or just what the finished project looks like? For example, if there's a geodesic dome, will we lose points if we include in an update that we used a set of triangles to create it, instead of independent triangles?

(Janm15) #26

Hello! If I want to design a complete 3d copy of a frame in the movie, am I allowed just to make an untextured 3d model, or I can use that frame from the movie to texture it, completely or partially?

(Creativeblendproductions) #27

From what I understood from the post https://blog.sketchfab.com/community-contest-lights-camera-immersion/ All entries are being judged based on their level of immersion. So the more immersive your scene the better chance you have. From what I understand.
