How do I achieve realistic textures?

Hey guys, been modeling this guy for so long, that I slowly dream of finally texturing him.
I tried to project the original colors onto it which gave me a weird looking texture. Now Im just wondering how I could create a realistic looking texture with lots of transparency in it. Heres a macro of what the pattern should look like

Heres an old version which lacks transparency in between the little snowflake looking colors

It also lacks shadows. Wonder how I could get shadows onto an existing texture.

I'm not sure what you mean about more realistic textures. Are you saying you want higher resolution? Did you baked the textures from one model to another?

As for the shadows, you have to turn on lights in the model settings.

You can also add a lightmap to the material.
