UV-Mapping/Baking Tutorials for Dummies?

(Edenlake) #1

Greetings from Germany :).I started to model like 5 Months ago and I think I do pretty good.I already did a Shotgun (It's also on my Sketchfab Profile so you can have a look at it!) and some weird kind of knife.Buuuuut to be honest I have no idea how to do the UV-Mapping.I have already seen a few tutorials but sadly there are no up-to-date (video-)tutorials for it.
Does anyone know a good tutorial for it?.Video or at least with pictures would be very awesome.
Ooooh and almost forgot it:I'm using the lastest version of 3DSMAX (Not sure which one it is).

Hi edenlake,

the basic process of unwrapping a model and creating a good texture hasn't changed much over the years. There have been some additions to this workflow in the recent 3ds Max versions but mostly these features let you do stuff quicker, not differently. So if you skip the wish to only have tutorials for 3ds Max 2015, there's a wealth of material to be found online.

For a basic walkthrough of the entire process check this video: http://youtu.be/nPrnp_kLOvY
Otherwise, the max 2015 help has a great tutorial: http://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2015/ENU/3DSMax-Tutorial/files/GUID-72EDF161-E5BC-4B43-86B9-08FE4A58AEB6.htm
This one's pretty old, but still good: http://waylon-art.com/uvw_tutorial/uvwtut_01.html
If you're willing to pay, Lynda.com has a few videos on this topic: http://www.lynda.com/3ds-Max-tutorials/Mastering-UVW-Mapping-3ds-Max/162708-2.html
This one on cgtuts is also good and very complete: http://cgi.tutsplus.com/tutorials/an-introduction-to-uvmapping-in-3d-studio-max-using-the-unwrap-uvw-modifier--cg-13780

Good luck!

Nice resources, thanks Klaas.

I don't have a Windows machine at the moment, so I've been trying to learn some basic UV mapping techniques in Blender.

Good Luck!
