ok, i should say what this is before I just keep plowing forwards.
Imagine if you would, a wide stone/brick bridge that held squashed shops/house/inns and market stalls, maybe even a stairway down to a small dock for riverboats.
all of the pieces will be modular.
the mouth of the bridge
the standard strut
harbor section
half section (typically for the harbor but could accommodate other add-ons.
vendor stalls
shop with housing
inn
boarding house?

Good theme. I can recommend an ideal reference for this. Ponte Vecchio in Florence. It has survived the centuries due to its unique character.

Interesting fact: In World War II, the retreating German army destroyed all other bridges in Florence but this one, supposedly due to direct orders (buildings on either end were destroyed to block passage).
